That portion of the Hauraki Gold Mining District as defined in a Proclamation by His Excellency the Governor, dated the 30th day of November, 1872, and published in the New Zealand Gazette, No. 72, of the 5th December, 1872, therein mentioned with the enlargement of the boundaries by the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland and dated the 20th day of February, 1873, and published in the Auckland Provincial Government Gazette dated the 20th day of February, 1873, and numbered 8, lying to the North of the Waikawau Block in the said district.
That portion of the Hauraki Gold Mining District, as defined in the said Proclamations, lying to the south of the said Waikawau Block.
The remainder of the Province of Auckland.

VUW Te Waharoa — Auckland Provincial Gazette 1873, No 28

After Parliament moved to Wellington in 1865, the Auckland Provincial Council sat in General Assembly House (depicted).

It was nicknamed the 'Shedifice' as it was large and drafty, with a leaking roof. First premier Henry Sewell described it as 'a great wooden barnshaped affair, which might serve for a Hospital, a Jail, or a Barrack'.
