EXPECTED VISIT OF H.R.H. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH.
Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 19th February, 1869.
THE following Letter, this day received from the Honorable the Colonial Secretary, having reference to the contemplated visit of His Royal Highness THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, is published for general information.
J. WILLIAMSON,
Superintendent.
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 11th February, 1869.
Sir,—As the time is approaching for the contemplated visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to New Zealand, and as, no doubt, the Provincial authorities and the inhabitants generally of the Province of Auckland are anxious to have due notice of his movements, in order that they may make arrangements for the fitting reception of His Royal Highness when he arrives there, I have to intimate to Your Honor, so far as I am at present able to do so, the probable time and duration of his visit to Auckland, and the nature of the arrangements to be made by the General Government with reference thereto, but until His Royal Highness arrives at Sydney it is impossible to specify any definite Programme. I will, however, give Your Honor the earliest notice of any alteration which may be hereafter determined on.
Accommodation for His Royal Highness, and his Suite, and the means of locomotion at Wellington and Auckland will be provided by the General Government, and it will rest with the local authorities to provide at their discretion any ceremonial display, or public entertainment, which they may wish to give in honour of His Royal Highness.
His Royal Highness will probably, as far as it is possible to anticipate his movements in New Zealand, arrive at Auckland in the early part of May next, and it is proposed that during that month he should visit Waikato, Tauranga, and the Lakes.
I have, &c.,
E. W. STAFFORD.
