THE following Notifications are re-published from the New Zealand Gazette, for general information.

THE following Act, passed by the Provincial Council, and assented to by the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland intituled

"The Appropriation Act, 1868, No. 3,"
having been laid before the Governor, His Excellency has not been advised to exercise his power of disallowance in respect of it.

IN accordance with the terms of a Resolution adopted by the House of Representatives on the 15th of October last, the Government offers the under-mentioned Premiums for the best Essays to be written on the following subject:

"The means for securing the Permanent Settlement of the Mining Population of New Zealand, and for fixing within the Colony the Capital which is being drained away from the Gold Fields, as shown in the great excess of exports over imports at the Ports of the exclusively Gold-Mining Districts."

The Premiums will be Fifty Pounds (£50), Thirty Pounds (£30), and Twenty Pounds (£20), for three Essays respectively first, second, and third in degree of merit on the above-named subject. The Government will appoint Examiners to decide on the comparative merits of the Essays.

The Essays should be sent to and received in the Colonial Secretary’s Office on or before the 28th February, 1869, under distinctive mottoes, the respective name and motto of each writer to be enclosed in separate sealed envelopes, which will not be opened until after the Examiners have made their decision.

Each Essay should be enclosed in a sealed envelope superscribed "Essay on Settlement of Gold Fields."

The Examiners will be at liberty, if they think fit, to decide that none of the Essays received are entitled to either or any one of the Premiums offered.

THE TAUPO DISTRICT.

Bounded on the north-east by the north-eastern boundary of Mataitai Block No. 3, the north-eastern boundary of Mataitai Block No. 4, and the north-eastern boundary of Mataitai Block No. 6, all of the Parish of Taupo in the County of Eden; on the south-east by the south-eastern boundary of Mataitai Block No. 6 aforesaid to its junction with the line known as the Wairoa confiscation boundary line; thence by said confiscation boundary line to the road which forms the south-eastern boundary of Allotment No. 25 and part of the south-eastern boundary of Allotment No. 24 of the Parish of Otau to the Waimoko River, thence by the Waimoko River aforesaid to the road which forms part of the south-eastern boundary of Allotment No. 30 of the Parish of Otau aforesaid, thence by said road to the Wairos River; on the south-west by the Wairoa River aforesaid to the south-eastern angle of allotment No. 6 of the Parish of Taupo; on the west by the south-eastern boundary of Allotments Nos. 6 and 9 of the Parish of Taupo aforesaid, the north-eastern boundary of the last named lot, and by said boundary produced to the Wairoa River; and on the north-west by the Wairoa River aforesaid to the Hauraki Gulf and by the Hauraki Gulf aforesaid to the point of commencement.

PUBLIC NOTIFICATION.

Superintendent of the Province of Auckland.

IN pursuance of the power in me vested by the fourth clause of "The Highways Act, 1867," I do hereby bring the said Act into operation in the district of Taupo, and appoint the First Meeting of the Electors to take place at the residence of Mr. James Bell, Wairoa, on Thursday, the twenty-eighth day of January instant, at eleven o’clock in the forenoon.
