VOL. XVI.] WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1867. [No. 51.]

PREPARATION FOR THE RECEPTION OF HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH.

Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 13th November, 1867.

THE following communication received from the Honourable the Colonial Secretary, is published for general information.

J. WILLIAMSON,
Superintendent.

Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 8th Nov., 1867.

Sir,—As the intended visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to New Zealand will soon take place, I would suggest for your Honor’s consideration the propriety of a Reception Committee being appointed for the purpose of making the necessary arrangements for the suitable reception of His Royal Highness, an object which I am sure the inhabitants of the Province of Auckland will be anxious to ensure, from a desire both to give a hearty welcome to the Prince, and to testify their loyalty to Our Most gracious Sovereign.

The General Government will, from the funds placed at its disposal for the reception of His Royal Highness, be prepared to contribute towards the cost of such arrangements proposed by the Committee, with your Honor’s sanction, as may be approved; but the expense of making the necessary preparations for the accommodation of His Royal Highness will only admit of a limited amount being available from that source for those public demonstrations which are fitting to the occasion.

I am unable at present to state the exact date when His Royal Highness may be expected, but as soon as I am in possession of reliable information on the subject, I will at once communicate it to your Honor.

I have, &c.,
(Signed) E. W. STAFFORD.

His Honor the Superintendent,
Auckland.

PUBLIC MEETING.

The Superintendent hereby convenes a Public Meeting of the inhabitants of Auckland, to be held in the Hall of the Mechanics’ Institute, on Saturday, the 23rd November instant, at 3 o’clock p.m., for the purpose of considering the subject of the foregoing communication.

J. WILLIAMSON,
Superintendent.

Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, November 13, 1867.

Printed under the authority of the Provincial Government of the Province of Auckland by W. C. WILSON, Wyndham-street, Auckland, Printer for the time being to the Provincial Government.
