NOTICE TO MASTERS OF COASTERS, BOATMEN, AND OTHERS, NAVIGATING THE THAMES.
DIRECTIONS FOR ENTERING KAU-AERANGA CREEK, THAMES GOLD FIELDS.
NOTICE is hereby given that, a black (cask) buoy, has been placed off the entrance of Kauaeranga Creek, one mile south of Tararu Point, and lies in (10) ten feet at low water spring tides, near to which small vessels waiting for flood tide, or otherwise, may (except in strong north westerly wind) anchor with safety.
From the above mentioned buoy, two remarkable conical hills will be seen, bearing S.E. by E. ½ E. by compass; these hills kept in one will lead to the first (can) buoy at the entrance of the creek, leaving it close to on the starboard hand, follow the course of the channel (which is about thirty (30) fathoms wide, and nearly dry at low water) as indicated by four other similar buoys on the right bank, and by stakes on the left, up to the landing place, where the channel deepens, and for some distance above, to six and seven feet at low water. It is high water, full, and change at about 7:30; range of tide, about 8 feet.
Note, vessels leaving the creek at high water, should keep close up to the line of buoys, the first quarter of ebb tide setting strongly over the flats, across the channel towards Tararu Point.
Vessels from Auckland bound to Kauaeranga, after passing through the sandspit passage (Waiheki) should steer so as to pass about two (2) miles N.N.E. of Orere Point. The compass course from thence to Tararu Point being S.E. by E. ½ E.; distance, 16 miles.
With reference to the above course, it is to be observed, that the strength of tide is about 1 ½ knots, the flood setting to the south east.
