✨ Native Land Court Notices
Superintendent's Office,
Auckland, 2nd March, 1865.
THE following letter received from the Chief Judge of the Compensation Court, is published for general information.
ROBERT GRAHAM,
Superintendent.
Compensation Court Office,
Auckland, 27th February, 1865.
Sir,—Very considerable embarrassment has been caused to me by a statement alleged to have been made by Mr. Newman in the Provincial Council relative to his proposed method of dealing with a block of land at Pukaki, and another block of land at Thamatea, the property of Aboriginal Natives. As neither of these blocks of land have been dealt with under the "New Zealand Settlements Act 1863," I have been unable to offer to the Natives who have written to me and visited me on the subject any satisfactory reason for Mr. Newman's interference with them.
Under the circumstances I have the honor to request that your Honor will have the goodness in such manner as you think best to announce publicly that any statement made by any person to the effect that the lands referred to have been taken by the Crown or could be interfered with at present by officers of Government is incorrect.
I should add that I have not seen the speech of Mr. Newman myself, but judge of its purport and effect from the complaints of the Maories.
I have, &c.,
F. D. FENTON,
Chief Judge Compensation Court.
His Honor the Superintendent.
Superintendent's Office,
Auckland, 2nd March, 1865.
THE Superintendent has no power to interfere with the debates in Council or desire to take cognizance of them; but he considers it his duty, in order obviate public inconvenience, to inform all whom it may concern, that no such statement as that complained of in Mr. Fenton's letter, has been made in any place, by authority or consent of the Provincial Government.
ROBERT GRAHAM,
Superintendent.
NATIVE LAND COURT.

F. D. FENTON,
Chief Judge of the Court.
