PROCLAMATION.

Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 22nd August, 1865.

By SAMUEL JACKSON, Esquire, Deputy Superintendent of the Province of Auckland.

WHEREAS, by the "Thistle Act, 1858," it was amongst other things enacted

that it should be lawful for the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland from time to time,

b. Proclamation in the Provincial Government Gazette, to declare that the said Act should come into operation within any district, and thereby to proclaim the limits of the District,

Now, therefore, in pursuance of the powers and authority in me vested, I, the said Deputy-Superintendent, do hereby proclaim and declare that the said "Thistle Act, 1858," shall, on and after the first day of September next, come into operation within the Auckland District, and the limits of the said District shall be the boundaries of the province of Auckland.

Given under my hand, at Auckland,
in the said Province, this twenty-fourth day of August, One thousand eight hundred and sixty-five.

A PROCLAMATION

Constituting certain Public Gaols in the Province of Auckland.

By his Excellency Sir George Grey
Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c., &c., &c.

WHEREAS power is vested in the Governor of New Zealand by Proclamation to declare any house, building, enclosure or place, to be a Public Gaol :

After Parliament moved to Wellington in 1865, the Auckland Provincial Council sat in General Assembly House (depicted).

It was nicknamed the 'Shedifice' as it was large and drafty, with a leaking roof. First premier Henry Sewell described it as 'a great wooden barnshaped affair, which might serve for a Hospital, a Jail, or a Barrack'.
