The following communication received from the Honourable the Colonial Secretary, with the enclosure, from Lieutenant Hill Yonge, and others of Her Majesty’s late Ship Orpheus, are published for general information.
Robert Graham,
Superintendent.
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Auckland, 11th February, 1863.
Sir,—
I have the honor to enclose a copy of a letter, dated 9th instant, which has been received from Lieutenant Hill Yonge and others, of Her Majesty’s late ship Orpheus, conveying the thanks of the surviving Officers and Crew for the subscription which has been raised for them by the inhabitants of Auckland.
I have, &c.,
Alfred Domett.
His Hon. the Superintendent,
Chairman of the Public Meeting for the Orpheus Relief Fund.
H. M. S. Miranda,
Auckland, N. Z.,
9th February, 1863.
Gentlemen,—The surviving officers and crew of H. M. ship Orpheus, cannot leave on their return to England, without expressing their grateful thanks to the inhabitants of Auckland, for the extraordinary liberality which prompted the munificent subscription, in a few hours, that has been received at the hands of the Committee, and through His Excellency Sir George Grey.
Exposed to one of the common accidents of a seaman’s life, but far distant from all known friends and relations, the officers and men have not language adequately to express what they do feel at the ready and most unlooked for assistance which has been rendered on this occasion, by utter strangers.
They feel assured that these sentiments will be responded to by the whole navy. The service will never forget the noble generosity of the kind people of Auckland.
We have, &c.,
Charles Hill, Lieutenant.
Duke Yonge, Lieutenant.
Edward H. Amphlett, Paymaster.
Bennett W. Fielding, Midshipman.
W. Mason, Boatswain.
John Beer, Carpenter.
Henry Staple, Boatswain’s Mate.
J. Francis, Captain Main-top.
Henry Brown, Quarter Master.
*On the part of the rest of the crew.
To the Hon. Alfred Domett, Reader Wood, and the other gentlemen of the Committee.
Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, February 12th, 1863.
HAVING received a requisition signed by a numerous and influential body of the inhabitants of the Province of Auckland, suggesting the propriety of observing a Day of Mourning for our fellow countrymen who perished by the wreck of H.M.S. Orpheus, at Manakau, on Saturday last, I hereby invite the inhabitants of this Province to observe as a Day of Mourning, Friday, 17th instant, and I hereby notify that all the Provincial Government Offices will be closed on that day.
Robert Graham,
Superintendent.
