THE following letter from the Honorable the Colonial Secretary is published for general information, and notice is hereby given that the Inspector of Police has orders to take active measures for the detection and punishment of those persons who have been or who may be guilty of injuring or destroying the trees in the Government Domain.
J. WILLIAMSON,
Superintendent.
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Auckland, December 29th, 1859.
SIR,—I regret to have to inform your Honor that there appears to be a regular intention on the part of some person or persons to injure the ornamental trees and shrubs in the Domain. Some time since the tops were cut off a number of foreign trees planted there—more recently, a still larger number of these trees were broken down and trampled on—and two days ago a fire newly lighted within the enclosed plantation was discovered, which, from the quantity of dry grass and copsewood there, must inevitably have consumed every tree and shrub, besides risking a general conflagration of the adjoining buildings in Parnell, but for the fortunate accident of the discovery of the fire a few minutes after it was lighted, and there being at the time no wind to fan the flame. As, in addition to the dangers likely to accrue to the adjoining properties, one of the principal ornaments to the Suburbs of Auckland, and which it is sought to improve for the public enjoyment and at the public expense, would be destroyed if the woods in the Domain were burnt down, I would suggest to your Honor the advisability of the Police being instructed to visit the Domain occasionally with a view to the detection and apprehension of any persons disposed to commit injuries within it, and that it should be extensively circulated, by notice in the Provincial Government Gazette or otherwise, that the Police were on the look out for such offenders.
It would further conduce to the preservation of the Domain, if your Honor would appoint the Government Gardener and the Ranger (Lynch and Briggs) to be Policemen, but without pay, for the special purpose of empowering them to apprehend any persons committing injuries within the Domain.
I have, &c.,
E. W. STAFFORD.
His Honor the Superintendent,
Auckland.
