Sir,—I have the honor to transmit herewith a copy of the correspondence noted in the margin—[Resident Magistrate to Colonial Secretary, 12th February 1857, No. 33; Under Secretary to Resident Magistrate, 16th February, 1857]—between the General Government and the Resident Magistrate, relative to the appointment and remuneration of officers to collect the next Census, and I have to request your Honor will be good enough to recommend the names of such persons as may be required for the above purpose, in order that the necessary appointments, as required by law, may be made by the Governor.

Sir,—In reply to your letter of the 12th instant, No. 33, respecting the appointment of officers to collect the Census, I am directed by the Colonial Secretary to inform you that as the Provincial Government defrays the cost of that collection, the question of the appointment and remuneration of the persons employed will be left to that Government to determine, and that, on the Superintendent making the necessary arrangements, the appointments will pro forma, be made as required by law by the Governor.
A copy of your letter, and of this reply, will be forwarded to his Honor.

Sir,—I have the honor to draw your attention to the third clause of the “Census Ordinance,” Session XI, No. 8, relative to the “appointment of persons to collect the information required by that Ordinance,” also to the latter paragraph of your letter of the 22nd December last, with reference thereto, and request you will be pleased to acquaint me at your earliest convenience whether his Excellency’s Government desires me to recommend fitting persons for this office; about twenty will be required for the Province, and as I do not believe that they can be obtained at the rate specified in the “Census Ordinance,” beg to refer you to your letter dated March 1st, 1855, No. 43, upon this subject, and to suggest that they be engaged on the same terms.
These appointments will be required to be made without delay.
