Sir,—As the sums voted for several of the Provincial Roads are nearly exhausted, I have the honor to lay before you the accompanying Reports upon each work under my directions:

  1. Report on that part of the Great South gun, commencing on or Road in the Village about the beginning of last May, and now terminated.
  2. Report on Great South Road from cutting by Mr. Farmer’s of completion to commencement of broken stone opposite Mr. McLean’s.
  3. Report on Panmure and Otahuhu Road.
  4. Report on Howick Road from the church to the beach.
  5. Report on Howick Road from the ferry to the church.
  6. Report on Epsom Road to Onehunga.
  7. Report on Onehunga (Queen-street) Road.

GREAT SOUTH Road, in the Village of Otahuhu.

The following are the particulars of the Expenditure and Improvements:—

Number of chains completed from about the 1st of May to the 7th of July, including forming, rough chiselling, metalling, gravelling, and covering with shell stuff ... 31

Number of chains formed in advance of said work ... 1

Number of loads of metal carted, at 5s. per load ... 131 ½

Number of days’ work performed by labourers, at 6s. per diem ... 401 ¾

There have been, in addition to this work, two considerable and expensive culverts made, together with cuttings and fillings, side drains and ditches.

Total cost of work, including incidental repairs to other parts of the neighbourhood ... £615 5s. 3d

The total cost at per chain has been ... 19 16s 11d

GREAT SOUTH Road from cutting by Mr. Farmer’s residence, to the commencement of the broken stone at the causeway, opposite Mr. McLean’s.

This part of the Great South Road by Mr. Farmer’s gate commences with a cutting, which has been completed, say 7 x 132 x 25.

Side paved drains have been formed at the base of the cutting, and a portion of the corresponding parapet made with a protecting wall. After this, the road from Mr. Farmer’s gate would form one section from the first cross road going towards Otahuhu, and from said cross road to the end.
