Waste Land Board Correspondence

AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT GAZETTE.

Published by Authority.

Vol. 3.] AUCKLAND, FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1855. [No. 22.

Superintendent’s Office, Auckland, 11th July, 1855.

THE subjoined Correspondence, supplementary to that which was published at the request of the Waste Land Board, in the Provincial Government Gazette, is published for general information.

Wm. Brown,
Superintendent.

Colonial Secretary’s Office, Auckland, 22nd June, 1855.

Sir,—Adverting to your letter of the 11th inst., in which your Honor states that serious injury is being entailed upon this Province through withholding means of payment of the expenses requisite for laying out, sale, and occupation of Waste Lands placed at the disposal of the Waste Land Board, I am directed by the Officer administering the Government to inform you that His Excellency is prepared to sanction the payment of the necessary expenses of the Board by the General Government out of the Land Fund.

In order that this arrangement may be efficiently carried out, I am to request your Honor to state, for His Excellency’s information and guidance, what staff will be requisite to carry on the surveys of the Lands placed under the management of the Waste Land Board, and to recommend for appointment proper persons for this service, regard being had to the claims of officers already in the employment of the Survey Department. Should your Honor, however, be of opinion that the surveys can be more economically carried on by contract, then the expenses will be defrayed by the Treasurer of the Board, on the certificate of the Officers of the Board that the work has been duly and satisfactorily performed, and that a map of the survey has been deposited in the Office of the Waste Land Board.

I have, &c.,
Andrew Sinclair,
Colonial Secretary.

His Honor the Superintendent, Auckland.

Superintendent’s Office, Auckland, June 26, 1855.

Sir,—I have the honor of forwarding to you a copy of a letter addressed by the Colonial Secretary to myself, and to invite your attention to the following observation contained therein:—

“I am to request your Honor to state, for His Excellency’s information and guidance, what staff will be requisite to carry on the survey of the lands placed under the management of the Waste Land Board, and to recommend for appointment proper persons for this service, regard being had to the claims of Officers already in the employment of the Survey Department.”

In reference to this observation, I have the honor to enquire whether the services of any of the Officers attached to your department are no longer required by you.

I have, &c.,
Wm. Brown,
Superintendent.

The Surveyor-General,
Auckland.
