Mr. Boylan gave notice that on to-morrow he would move that Messrs. Connell, Derrom, O’Brien, Gilfillan, J. O’Neil, Dignan, and the mover, be appointed a Committee to arrange with the Surveyor General, relative to the City Endowments.

Mr. Busby gave notice that he would move, on the Council going into Committee on the Supplementary Estimates, a Resolution of this Council, that his Honour the Superintendent be requested to pay to Mr. Coates, the Clerk of Council, the sum of 50l. as additional remuneration, out of the 1000l. placed upon the Supplementary Estimates for Contingencies.

Mr. Powditch gave notice that at the next meeting of Council, he would move that the Honourable the Speaker, convey the thanks of this Council to his Excellency the Governor, for the interest he has taken in procuring a liberal Constitution, and the extension of the Elective Franchise, for New Zealand, and for his promptitude in handing over to the Provincial Councils, as far as in his power, the disposal of their Local Revenues.

Mr. Powditch gave notice that at the next meeting of Council, he would move the first reading of the Superintendent’s Salary Bill.

Mr. Busby gave notice that he would move, on the order of the day for the Council to go into Committee on the Deeds Bill, a resolution of this Council, that it is the duty of the Government to cause all lands, for which Crown Titles have been issued, and which are not the property of the Crown, to be surveyed without delay, in order that the same may be registered under the provisions of the Registration Ordinance, No. 9, Session 2, and that the said resolution be communicated by the Speaker to his Honour the Superintendent.

Mr. Busby gave notice that he would move in Committee on the “Deeds Bill” that, after clause 15 as printed in the Bill, the following clause be inserted—‘And whereas by clause 49 of the said recited Ordinance, No. 9 of Session 2, it is enacted that this Ordinance shall come into operation within any county or district, at such time as his Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, shall by proclamation appoint. And whereas certain of her Majesty’s subjects are subjected to disabilities and loss, by being unable to register their Crown Grants. Be it therefore enacted that all Crown Grants which have been issued for lands not surveyed, shall be received and registered without any delineation of the boundaries.’

On the orders of the day being moved, Mr. Gilfillan requested that Members would postpone their notices of motion in order that the Supplementary Estimates might be considered.

Mr. Dignan moved that the sum of 250l. be voted for Public Fountains. Debate ensued, Mr. Potter moved as an amendment that 500l. be granted in lieu thereof, for the Tamaki Road. Committee divided on the amendment. Ayes 3, Noes 10. Amendment negatived.

Mr. Williamson moved as a further amendment on the original question, “That the cleansing of the River Awaroa be considered before the item for Public Fountains and that the sum of 200l. be substituted for 250l.” Amendment put and agreed to.

Mr. Gilfillan requested permission of Committee that Mr. Clarke might be relieved from the duties of Chairman, as he was on the eve of departure for the Bay of Islands, and that Mr. Mitchell do take the Chair. Agreed to.

Mr. Mitchell took the Chair. Consideration of Estimates resumed.

Mr. Dilworth moved that the balance of Revenue, say 400l., be spent on local works, when a like sum shall be subscribed by the inhabitants. Amendment put and negatived.

On the question being put that 100l. be voted for the road from Otahuhu to Howick, Mr. Williamson moved that 25l. be substituted for 100l. to be expended by his Honour the Superintendent, contingent on the inhabitants in the locality subscribing a like amount.

Agreed to.

On the motion of Mr. Gilfillan 25l were voted for a Bridge on the Howick road. And on motion of Mr. Lewis 50l. for house for Ferry-man at Panmure.

Mr. Bain moved that 250l. be voted for the Tamaki Road.

Agreed to.

On motion of Mr. Derrom the sum of 50l. was voted for Public Fountains.

The other three items on the Estimates were struck out.

On the motion of Mr. Gilfillan it was ordered that the Chairman do report progress and ask leave to sit again on Thursday, the 22nd instant.
