The present returns show an increase of 12,278 sheep, as compared with the returns of 1873, and the flocks, generally speaking, are improving.
The severe winter has made considerable havoc in some of the flocks in exposed and wet localities, but in warm and dry high lands the loss has been comparatively small.
During the year a considerable number of shipments of sheep have arrived in Wellington from England, Melbourne, and Sydney for the purpose of improving the flocks, at considerable expense.
Soab has again made its appearance in this district; there is not much danger to be apprehended as it is confined to one locality only, and as the sheep appear few in number, and have been well and thoroughly dressed I hope soon to number them with the clean flocks.
R. D. WALLACE,
Inspector of Sheep, Wellington and West Coast District.
