Capacity as Police Constable
For publication in the newspapers.

Vote at any election of any member of the House of Representatives, or Provincial Council, nor
-
Belong to any political society or to any secret society, except those permitted by law.
Duties of Police Constables
-
Every police constable shall—
-
Obey the lawful commands of his superior officers, and justices of the peace.
-
At all times (unless otherwise specially permitted) be neat in his person, and properly dressed in uniform.

Abstain from religious and political controversies and disputes, especially in barracks, and amongst his comrades.

Properly apply all moneys and goods taken under warrant, or from any prisoner, and
-
Make a true and faithful return of all public moneys which shall be received by him, and shall properly apply the same.

Every police constable who shall know where any offender shall be residing or concealed, shall take due and prompt measures for the arrest of such offender, or he shall immediately give to his superior officer information of the same.

It shall be the duty of every police constable to suppress any tumult, riot, affray, or breach of the peace which shall take place, and any public nuisance or offence against the law, which shall be committed within that part of the Province in which he shall be on duty.

The sergeants and privates of police shall, when not engaged on actual duty elsewhere, attend on justices of the peace at their several sessions or courts, which shall be held at the respective places where such sergeants and privates shall be stationed, and shall obey and execute all lawful summons, warrants, executions, orders, and commands of such justices, in all cases, civil and criminal.

Every sergeant and private of police shall make a true and faithful return:

Of all rewards for services which he shall perform in the execution of his duty.

Of all fees which he shall receive for the execution of process, and
-
Of all fines and proportions of fines which shall be paid to him by order of any justice or otherwise for any act or thing done, or for any matter concerning the execution of his duty, and shall pay the same to the commissioner to form a Police Reward Fund, to be by the commissioner distributed for meritorious services to such constables and in such proportions as he shall think fit:—

The whole of every police constable’s time shall be due to the public service, he must reside wheresoever he may be directed, and conform to all rules and regulations, established by the Superintendent of the province or the commissioner of police.

If any sergeant or private of the Police Force, shall have any cause of complaint against any sergeant or private of the said force, he shall in the first instance make his complaint to the commissioner, and if he should feel aggrieved by the decision of the commissioner he may then, (or with the permission of the commissioner, in the first instance) if the matter shall be within the jurisdiction, make his complaint to the resident magistrate, of the district in which the subject of complaint shall arise.
Penalties

The penalty for desertion is any sum not exceeding twenty pounds.

The penalty for taking a bribe or gratuity, suffering escape, neglecting to execute any warrant, or to make seizure or favouring any person in custody, is any sum not exceeding twenty pounds, or imprisonment with hard labour for any period not exceeding six months.

The penalty for the breach of any other of these regulations, is any sum not exceeding 20s. to be stopped by the commissioner from the pay of any offending constable, or upon conviction before justices of the peace, any sum not exceeding £20 and not less than five shillings, and in addition thereto or in default of payment, the offender shall be liable to be imprisoned for not less than one week nor more than six months.
