POLICE REGULATIONS.

In pursuance of the powers in me vested in that behalf, I, JAMES A. R. MENZIES, Esq., Superintendent of the Province of Southland, do hereby make the following regulations respecting the training, arms and accoutrements, clothing, and equipment of the Police Force of the Province of Southland, for maintaining the discipline and efficiency thereof, that is to say:—

  1. The Superintendent shall, by warrant under his hand, appoint a fit and proper person to be commissioner of such Police Force, who shall be charged and invested with the general control and management of the Police Force.

  2. The commissioner shall appoint as many sergeants and privates of police as the Superintendent shall from time to time direct, but the appointment of every such sergeant and private shall be subject to be disallowed by the Superintendent.

  3. No person shall be appointed a police constable who is unable to read and write, or who shall have been convicted of any felony, or who shall be a hired servant in the employment of any person or persons whomsoever, or who shall keep a house for the sale of beer, wine, or spirituous liquor by retail; and any person who, by concealing any one or more of the circumstances hereinbefore enumerated, shall obtain admission into the said Police Force, and thereby cause a breach of these regulations, shall be liable to the penalties provided in the 7th section of the “Constabulary Force Ordinance, No. 2,” session 7, and shall forfeit his appointment as police constable.

  4. Every police constable who shall become a hired servant (except in the capacity of such police constable), or who shall keep a house for the sale of beer, wine or spirituous liquors, shall thereupon forfeit his appointment as police constable, and shall be subject to the penalties hereinbefore specified.

  5. If any person shall by concealing the fact of his having been dismissed from any Police Force of the colony, or shall by any false or forged certificate or any false representation obtain admission into, and receive pay in, the Police Force, he shall be liable to the penalties hereinbefore specified.

  6. Every police constable of the Province of Southland, who shall have been appointed before, and shall be acting as police constable at the time of the publication of these regulations, shall be deemed and taken to have been appointed in conformity therewith.
