Bye-Laws Passed at a Meeting of the Wardens of Oteramika Hundred, Held on the 8th February, 1872
-
No cattle of any description shall be depastured on the unsold land within the Hundred, except by license holders.

No sheep shall be depastured on the unsold lands.
-
No entire horse over twelve months old, and no bull over six months old, shall be depastured, without special permission of the Wardens, on the unsold land.

All license holders shall, on or before the 8th day of March, 1872, register with the nearest Warden a statement of the number of cattle and horses depastured by them on the unsold land within the Hundred, with their brands.

Before removing or slaughtering cattle, owners shall give notice to the nearest Warden.

Any person about to bring cattle on the run shall, one week before so doing, furnish to the nearest Warden notice in writing with such information as shall give opportunity for inspection.

No person shall be allowed to depasture on the unsold lands in the Hundred more than one head of cattle for every twenty-five acres of land owned or occupied by him in the Hundred.

All stray cattle may be impounded.

The penalty for any breach of the foregoing Bye-Laws shall be any sum not exceeding five pounds, to be recovered in a summary manner, in accordance with the 45th Clause of the “Southland Waste Lands Act 1865.”

School Committee Elections
In consequence of no School Committee having been elected, His Honor the Superintendent has fixed Monday, the 25th day of March, 1872, at seven o’clock p.m., for the election of a School Committee in each of the following mentioned districts, viz.—Cromwell, Arrow, Bluff, Trotter’s Creek, Flint’s Bush, and Hampden. The meeting in each district will be held in the Schoolhouse. See “Education Ordinance 1864,” section 15.

Examination for Teachers
Persons wishing to obtain employment under the Otago Education Board, and teachers already so employed who have not yet received full certificates of competency, are invited to attend an examination to be held at the Education Office, Dunedin, on Friday, the 22nd day of March, 1872, at half-past nine o’clock, a.m.

Special Meeting of the Education Board
A special meeting of the Education Board will be held at the Government Buildings, Dunedin, on Thursday, the 29th February, 1872, at twelve o’clock noon.

Provincial Scholarships
The following Regulations of the Education Board respecting Provincial Scholarships are published for general information. Schoolmasters are requested to forward to me, before the 26th February, 1872, a list containing the names and ages of intending competitors belonging to their several schools.

Regulations

Three Scholarships, in connection with the High School, shall be open for competition on the 27th of February, 1872, to boys who shall have been in attendance at the public schools of Otago during the year 1871. Two of the said Scholarships shall be bestowed on boys from the District Schools, and one on a boy who has attended the High School. Competitors must be under fourteen years of age at the date of the competition.

The holders for the time being of the said Scholarships shall be called “Provincial Scholars,” and shall be entitled to the privileges and advantages hereinafter specified. A Scholarship shall be tenable as long as the holder of it remains a pupil of the High School, but not longer than five years.

The said Scholarships respectively shall be awarded to such candidates as shall have shown the greatest proficiency.
