Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 16th July, 1850.
HIS EXCELLENCY the Lieutenant-Governor directs the publication of the following communication from Mr. Mantell, for general information.
By His Excellency’s Command,
ALFRED DOMETT,
Colonial Secretary.
Wellington, June 28, 1850.
DEAR SIR, — In my report on the coast between Akaroa and Otago, I described certain Septaria at One Kakara, which I stated to be available for the manufacture of Roman Cement.
I have just received from my father a note on the subject by Sir Henry De la Beche.
Thinking that this proof of our possessing so useful a material may interest you, I enclose a copy of Sir Henry’s note, begging you, if you deem it of sufficient importance, to communicate it to His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, and to the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, in whose territory I made the discovery.
I am, Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
(Signed) WALTER MANTELL.
The Hon. A. Domett, Colonial Secretary.
(Copy of Sir H. De la Beche’s note on a specimen of the One Kakara Septaria.)
Mr. DEAR DR. MANTELL,—
Herewith I send the analysis of your cement stone, for such it certainly looks to be. I need not tell you that cement-making requires careful cooking of the raw material.
Very faithfully
(Signed) H. DE LA BECHE.
