Waimate ... ... ... April 20 ... Present 49 ... Satisfactory on the whole, allowance being made for the long continuance of unfavourable weather. The Reading and Spelling should, however, be improved. The buildings are well painted, and are kept in good repair.

TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.

SIR,

I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the examinations and inspections during the month.

Pigeon Bay School ... ... May 4 ... Present 28 ... The classification is unequal as to the numbers. The subjects of instruction fair, except the Arithmetic, rather inaccurate.

Okain’s Bay School ... ... May 5 ... Present 34 ... The discipline, registration, and the progress are exemplary; the attainments very creditable.

Avonside (Inspected only.) ... May 8 ... Present 66 ... In good order.

St. John’s Boys’ School ... ... May 9 ... Present 78 ... The schoolroom is not large enough for the attendance; the discipline and the course of instruction appear to be satisfactory. N.B.—First examination.

St. John’s Girls’ School ... ... Same day; inspected only. The girls are in excellent order, very clean and neat; the general arrangements and the course of instruction appear to be satisfactory.

North Road School ... ... May 15 ... Present 11 ... The reduced attendance is much to be regretted; the discipline and progress of those present are very satisfactory.
