COMMISSIONER’S REPORT.
SHIP “CHARLOTTE GLADSTONE.”
SIR,—I have the honor to report that I inspected the above ship on her arrival at this port.
I found the compartments allotted to the single women and married people creditably clean, well ventilated, and in good order. The space occupied by the single men appeared devoid of sufficient light, and did not exhibit the same attention to cleanliness as displayed throughout the other parts of the vessel.
The immigrants unanimously spoke in the highest terms of the treatment they had received at the hands of the captain, surgeon, and officers of the ship. The matron, who suffered severely from sea sickness on the passage out, appears to have been most ably supported by her assistant Mrs. Hayes.
The provisions generally were of good quality, and were stated to have been served out regularly during the voyage. The distilling apparatus had worked satisfactorily throughout, and the supply of water was reported sufficient and good. I have much pleasure in recommending the payment of all gratuities, and the further employment of the surgeon-superintendent should he desire it.
In conclusion, I would wish to express the opinion of the health officer and myself that it would greatly improve and facilitate the sanitary arrangements of future emigrant ships were a bath-room added to the single females’ compartment, and a closet constructed between decks for the use of the married women.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
F. D. GIBSON,
Immigration Commissioner.
His Honor the Superintendent,
Christchurch.
TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
I HEREBY GIVE NOTICE that
HENRY GREEN
has resigned his appointment as Chief Fire Inspector for the Borough of Timaru, and that the same has been accepted by me.
HENRY CAIN,
