School Inspection Reports

xiv.

The highest attendance this quarter has been 60; the same number, including children of both sexes, attended the examination.

The school is divided in all into nine classes, some of them little dribblets of four or five in each, which might better be classed in larger classes, their attainments being so nearly equal.

The school still retains much of its former excellence, notwithstanding the establishment of private schools by former masters, with a view to afford a superior class of education without the interruption of large elementary classes.

The age of the scholars is of a considerably higher average than at the Ordinary Schools in Lyttelton, and the attainments are proportionable.

The school is superior to the generality of Ordinary Schools, and to those in Lyttelton; a good Lyttelton, but not a Provincial High School, not a "Superior" School in the terms of the Ordinance. The same statement was made the last time I examined the school in 1864.

With the exception of the want of some new wall maps; the school is well supplied with requisites. The discipline and behaviour are good, although not excelling those of the best Ordinary Schools.

The attainments throughout the school, in elementary and ordinary subjects, are very creditable. One advanced class of seven is studying higher branches, but the time can scarcely be spared for such a class without more assistance. It would be better to devote the time so taken up to the instruction of this and the next class combined, and to omit the higher branches except for pupils, who can either study by themselves or receive extra instruction out of the Ordinary School hours.

If the school should be again placed under the Board, a more complete registration will be requisite.

I have the honor to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
