MONTHLY SUMMARY REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS.

To the Hon. H. J. Tancred, Chairman.

SIR,—I have the honour to submit a summary Report on the schools examined during the month.

Thirteen ordinary schools, including 346 children, have been examined.

The Christmas, harvest, and other holidays, and the very wet weather, have prevented the examination of a greater number of schools, and have thinned the attendance of several of those examined.

OF THE SCHOOLS EXAMINED—

One is Satisfactory.

One—Very moderate.

One—A new school.

Five are Improved.

Five—Tolerable.

THE SCHOOLS EXAMINED.

Halswell ... Jan. 6 ... Present, 36 ... Tolerable.

The very imperfect reading, spelling, and tables of the Third Class showed an unequal distribution of the teaching. The higher Classes have made commendable progress. Register untidy.

Lincoln ... Jan. 7 ... Present, 41 ... Satisfactory, as to the attainments. Yellow blinds cause a painful glare. Two more desks at least are wanted, but a front row of three would make up the complement. Unsuitable books in use, owing to inability to procure those more requisite.

Leeston ... Jan. 8, very wet. Present, 9 ... New school, badly built; no chimney, no ventilation, very short of apparatus. Teacher most plodding.

Prebbleton ... Jan. 9 ... Present, 21 ... Improved; books not well adapted to the classes using them. Children very inanimate, want discipline and drill. Register incomplete.

Templeton ... Jan. 9 ... Present, 26 ... Tolerable. Registers incomplete.

Courtney ... Jan. 10 ... Present, 20 ... Much improved. Want drill, &c.

St. Albans ... Jan. 13 ... Present, 45 ... Tolerable. Registers incomplete.

North Road ... Jan. 15 ... Present, 25 ... Much improved. Registers incomplete as to one column. The fences (Church Property) out of repair.

Leithfield ... Jan. 20 ... Present, 17 ... Improved as to younger children, elder ones have mostly left. Attendance and efficiency reduced.

Saltwater Creek ... Jan. 20 ... Present, 17 ... Tolerable. Sunday benches piled up into a risky contrivance for writing desks. Want of order, in a
