VOL. XIV.] MONDAY, JULY 15, 1867. [No. XLIII.]
Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Christchurch, July 12, 1867.
THE following Reports of the examiners appointed to examine the Candidates for Scholarships, together with the results of the examinations, are published for general information.
F. E. STEWART,
Provincial Secretary.
To the Chairman of the Board of Education, Christchurch.
Christchurch, June 29, 1867.
Sir,
We beg to enclose you a table of marks, showing the result of our examination for the Open Scholarships. It will be seen that Atack is easily first, and Reeves second. Mr. Veel conducted the examination in Latin and Ancient History, Mr. Macfarlan in Arithmetic, and Mr. Habens in Sacred History, Modern History, Geography, and English Composition.
We are, Sir,
Your obedient servants,
J. V. Colborne Veel,
G. Macfarlan,
Wm. Jas. Habens.
To the Chairman of the Board of Education.
Christchurch, July 9, 1867.
Sir,
In compliance with your request that the Examiners for the Open Scholarships would furnish the Board of Education with a Report as to the efficiency of the candidates, in order that the Board may be able to ascertain who, in the opinion of the Examiners, were chiefly noticeable for their talents and application, I have the honor to submit the following Report:—
The part of the examination which I conducted comprised Classics and Ancient History. The word ‘classics’ is, of course, to be taken in an extremely limited sense. Only one or two of the candidates have begun Greek, and they had not, apparently, proceeded far enough to allow their knowledge to have any practical effect in the examination. In reality, therefore, by ‘classics’ is to be understood only so much Latin as boys of twelve years of age may fairly be expected to have acquired.
