BOARD OF EDUCATION.
INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.
(March 30—April 26, 1866.)
To the Honorable H. J. Tancred, Chairman.
Sir,—I have the honour, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Summary Report on the schools examined, and other business transacted during the month.
Ten schools, including 297 children, have been examined.
One candidate, W. L. Martin, for the mastership of the Templeton School, has been examined, as per special report of the 25th inst.
Thirty schools, &c., have benefited by supplies from the depot to the amount of £29 9s. 5d.
Of the Schools Examined:—
| School | Date | Present | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Road school | April 10 | 22 | Satisfactory. |
| St. Alban’s | „ 12 | 60 | |
| Lower Heathcote | „ 13 | 36 | Well begun. |
| Heathcote Valley | „ 16 | 35 | Unsatisfactory. As per special report. |
| Upper Heathcote | „ 17 | 81 | Satisfactory. |
| Halswell | „ 17 | 24 | Very creditable. |
| Lincoln | „ 18 | 19 | Improving. |
| Prebbleton | „ 18 | 24 | Satisfactory. |
| Riccarton | „ 19 | 26 | Satisfactory as to the attainments of the children; but the ill-contrived school-room is very drafty from its many windows and doors; there are not many broken panes, but the metal casements shut badly, and let in much cold. The room is not sufficiently lined above the low-wall plate. I was led to take more particular notice of this state of things by the severe ill-health of the master, and by the day being unusually cold for the time of the year. |
| Harewood Road School | April 20 | 20 | Satisfactory. |
The details of each examination are entered in the Journal.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
SPECIAL REPORT ON THE HEATHCOTE VALLEY SCHOOL.
Examined, April 16, in presence of the Chairman of the Board.
Children present, 35
Several members of the Local Committee attended.
The building has been partly repaired, but is still in an incomplete state.
The premises unfenced.
The organization, discipline, and attainments are very unsatisfactory.
The younger children in particular are insufficiently taught, and being left for long intervals unemployed, add to the disorder of the school. They are remarkably inapt at the rudiments of elementary knowledge. The older children, although professedly of considerably higher attainments, were also unusually inexpert and inaccurate in elementary knowledge.
I think that the school suffers for want of active local interest; the gentleman who has been elected Chairman of the Local Committee is often absent or otherwise too much occupied to attend to the interests of the school.
It is stated that several parents are removing their children because of their dissatisfaction with the present teacher.
A competent married couple is wanted to ensure the good attendance of children of both sexes.
J. P. RESTELL,
April 25th, 1866.
Inspector of Schools.
