In mathematics the children had evidently been very well and carefully taught. Their quickness in arithmetic was very remarkable. Three of them passed a very good examination in the first two books of Euclid. They appeared to understand the subject remarkably well. In algebra they had done but very little; what they had learnt they knew thoroughly.
In English history a large class was examined; and nearly all answered the questions well and correctly; the questions, in this subject, were confined to the period which the children had been studying during the half-year.
Good order is maintained, but there is a decided want of more buildings, as well as of a play ground. The number of pupils in the Lyttelton High School is ninety-two, of which thirty-seven are girls. The age of the pupils range from fourteen to four. They are under the care of two masters, and all meet in one school-room.
G. S. SALE,
Inspector of Schools.

THE HIGH SCHOOL, LYTTELTON.
A mixed school of boys and girls is here very creditably conducted by Mr. J. D. Fergusson, with the assistance of Mr. Ross.
The average age of the children is less than at the Christchurch High School, and their attainments are proportionable in English subjects and arithmetic.
The number of subjects of instruction being judiciously limited, a higher standard of accuracy is attained in the elementary branches.
The junior classes have improved under Mr. Ross; they read and spell fairly, and have a good general knowledge of the subject-matter of their lesson-books.
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
