School Inspection Reports

The Rev. J. Buller was present during

some part of the examination.

Paranui Wesleyan School.

August 31—Present 28.
Attendance reduced by recent inclemency
of weather. The school passed a creditable
examination in elementary, biblical, and
secular knowledge. The attainments were
in several respects above the average of
those of the Christchurch and St. Alban’s
Wesleyan Schools.

Christchurch Wesleyan School.

September 1—Present 74.
The attendance has fallen off during the
past half-year, owing to reduction of the
staff of teachers.

The head master is a careful and industrious
teacher, of moderate qualifications.

The assistant master, recently sanctioned
by the Board, appears to be working effi-
ciently.

The assistant mistress does not appear to
be efficient; her work does not seem to tell
upon the numbers or progress of the children.

The present standard of attainment in-
cludes a very moderate degree of accuracy.

St. Michael’s Church of England School.

September 2—Present 130.
A pleasant school-room well lighted and
ventilated; class-room enlarged. A steady
and a tolerably efficient staff of teachers.
Numbers increased. Fair progress. The
Ven. Archdeacon Jacobs was present during
a part of the examination.

Papanui Church of England School.

September 5—Present 62.
Considerable improvement since last ex-
amination. The Rev. L. Moore and several
ladies attended. One of the best examina-
tion papers I have seen this quarter was
done by one of the school children here—
(Appended).

Kaiapoi Wesleyan School.

September 6—Present 39.
A gradual improvement in the numbers
and attainments is perceivable. The school-
room and church or chapel have been opened
into one room, and better school accommo-
dation thus provided.

Woodend Wesleyan School.

September 6—Present 52.
The numbers have largely increased; the
room is too small, a new one is in course of
erection. The staff has been strengthened

by employing the master’s sister to help in
the needlework and care of the younger
children. There is much improvement in
the course of instruction now given in the
school.

Rangiora Church of England School.

September 8 and 9—Boys 47, Girls 20.
The school-room has been lined. The
premises are not well drained. The closets
are much too near the school-room; so also
stable and piggeries.

The best results may fairly be expected
from this school with its present staff of a
superior master, a trained mistress, and the
first pupil teacher appointed in the Province,
a youth of good promise under competent
training.

The boys passed a creditable examination
on the whole, history and geography re-
markably good; spelling and elementary
arithmetic less so.

The girls have been carefully and judi-
ciously taught.

The Rev. B. W. Dudley and ladies at-
tended the examination.

Lyttelton Wesleyan School.

September 12—Present 66.
The school passed a creditable examination,
chiefly in the more elementary subjects.

The Rev. J. Crump, Wesleyan Minister,
and ladies attended the examination.

Lyttelton Church of England School.

September 18—Present 68.
The improvement, whether as to numbers
or attainments, is either very gradual, or
remains at a very ordinary level. The arith-
metic somewhat improved as to accuracy;
also the spelling; the reading glib rather
than fluent; the writing similarly deficient;
neither are characterized by a good style or
the impress of a careful and skillful teacher.

History and geography, very moderate.
The teachers are steady and constant, and
tolerably efficient.

The Rev. F. Knowles was present during
the examination.

Kaiapoi Church of England School.

September 16—Present 36.
The school passed a very creditable
examination.

The children are carefully and judiciously
taught. They excel in accuracy of arith-
metic, but not in speed. The other elemen-
tary and ordinary subjects are equally
creditable throughout the school.
