School Inspection Reports

KAIAPOI CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL.

June 9—Present 44.

Very satisfactory. Careful methods. Superior attainments, as to accuracy in arithmetic and creditable papers on Scripture.

RANGIORA CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOLS.

June 10—Present Boys 51, Girls 15.

Attainments generally satisfactory, with exception of some inaccuracy in elementary subjects. An interesting examination, in which Mr. Merton, his son Charles, and Miss Hicks each took a part.

The Rev. B. W. Dudley, Miss Dudley and other ladies attended.

LYTTELTON HIGH SCHOOL.

June 18—Present 60.

The site has been changed to the opposite side of Winchester-street lower down, and the building has been satisfactorily removed. With the exception that the Bible knowledge is deficient, the attainments are generally satisfactory.

The expertness in slate arithmetic is remarkable.

Three boys each attempted a different proposition in Euclid, Book I; one of them succeeded.

The perceptible results are seldom commensurate with the time and labour expended on this subject.

LYTTELTON WESLEYAN SCHOOL.

June 14—Present 54.

The room facing S.W., gets no sunshine, and is extremely cold; small fire places quite inadequate; the children were troubled with incessant coughing, from which the neighbouring schools were free; the organization is good, except too great an admixture as to ages and attainments. Results very meagre on account of this circumstance and the large number.

LYTTELTON CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL.

Present 32, out of 87 on the books, in spite of cold and stormy weather.

Considerable improvement; shows that the teachers have worked hard, although not in the most systematic manner. The Rev. F. Knowles attended.

WOODEND WESLEYAN SCHOOL.

June 20—Present 44.

The school has much improved under the present master.

The organization is interfered with by the shape and furniture of the room, and by its use as a place of worship on Sundays and week days.

CHRISTCHURCH HIGH SCHOOL.

June 23 & 24—Present 75.

Weather unfavorable. There is no provision for warming the school.

Ventilation improved, but barely adequate. Bible knowledge, very moderate. Secular knowledge, fair.

In the higher branches too many subjects are attempted, the Latin and Euclid are but lame attempts. The Algebra, Mechanics and Logarithms are at present elementary.

Great credit is due to the Head Master for his zeal and diligence in the upper, and to the English Master for his work in the lower school.

The particulars of each examination are entered in the journal for your reference.

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.

QUARTER ENDING JUNE, 1864.

SUMMARY REPORT &c., OF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS.

To
The Hon. H. J. Tancred,
Chairman, Board of Education.

Sir,—
I have the honor, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Tabular Summary of the Quarterly Returns as to attendance and payment, and a Schedule, as to the efficiency of the schools examined, both for the quarter ending June 30th.

It will be seen from the Tabular Summary that during the quarter

The number of attendants has been 1991, an increase of 72 on the former quarter.

The average daily attendance 1289, an increase of 13.

The amount of school fees, £1124 12s 9d, an increase of £256 3s 7½d, chiefly due to the College, and the High School of Christchurch.

The other schools mostly show some small increase in numbers and payments, or very little decrease; any increase during the June quarter may be regarded as satisfactory, as the schools are then at their lowest ebb.
