Christchurch, August 29, 1862.
TENDERS will be received by the Provincial Government for the establishment of Ferries across the Tekapo, Pukaki and Ohou Branches of the Waitaki, where the dray track through the Mount Cook District crosses these streams.
A lease of the ferry reserve on one side of each stream will be granted for three years, and a conditional license will also be granted upon the following terms:—

-
That a sufficient supply of oats be kept, to be charged for to travellers at the rate of 8d. per imperial quart measure.
-
That a safe ferry boat be kept, which, before being used, shall be approved of by the Provincial Government.
-
That passengers be at all times ferried across or accompanied across the stream, at a charge not exceeding 1s. for foot passengers, 2s. 6d. for horsemen, 5s. for drays and other vehicles, 10s. per ton for merchandise, and 1s. per bale for wool.
-
Officers of the General and Provincial Governments, magistrates on duty, police constables on duty and prisoners, her Majesty’s mails and the person in charge thereof (with one horse) to be ferried or shown across the stream, free of charge.
-
To afford every assistance in their power in directing travellers to a safe ford.
The usual other conditions in similar cases will be enforced, and extension of the accommodation, including provision for the shelter of stock, will be required at the next Annual Licensing Meeting.
At the end of the lease the Provincial Government will pay for all improvements of a substantial character, the value of such improvements to be ascertained by arbitration.
In the event of persons of satisfactory character offering to undertake any of these ferries, the Provincial Government will advance by way of loan a sum to enable them to put the necessary buildings in hand at once.
The Government will not necessarily accept any tenders.
Tenders to be sent in to the Provincial Secretary by the 15th of October, and the names of persons tendering must be accompanied with a reference as to character and fitness.
THOS. WM. MAUDE,
