NOTICE TO MARINERS.
SUNKEN ROCK NORTHERN ENTRANCE TO HAURAKI GULF.
Harbour Office,
Auckland, 6th January, 1870.
LIEUTENANT G. A. WOODS, Commander of the Surveying Schooner ‘Edith,’ reports the existence of a sunken rock between Bream Tail and the Sail Rock, northern entrance to Hauraki Gulf, as follows:—
The McGregor Rock, lying between Bream Tail and the Sail Rock, is a dangerous sunken rock, having but eleven feet at low water spring tides; it is of a pinnacle formation, with six and thirteen fathoms within a boat’s length all round, and bears by compass:—
From Bream Island, N.N.W. ¼ W., 10 5-6 miles.
From the Sail Rock, N.E. ½ E. 3½ miles.
Outer Islet off Mangawhai Breakwater, S. ½ E. 3½ miles.
Mariners navigating to the northward or southward may be certain of clearing this danger by passing within two miles of the Sail Rock.
I. J. BURGESS,
Chief Harbour Master.
