17 M James Hedges 42 Hypertrophy of heart 1838 Jan. 30 1868 April 20 88 General dropsy and dyspnoea were the prominent symptoms. Much serum was found in pleurae and pericardium. Heart weighed 14½ lb., aorta dilated, valves ossified and shortened; liver presented the nutmeg appearance.
18 M William Brown 35 Liver disease and dropsy Jan. 24 „ 28 65 Was perfectly jaundiced on admission, with ascites and dysentery. Tapped with temporary relief. Liver small, roughened and yellow, constituting the state called cirrhosis. Intestines perfectly black, with numerous ulcers.
19 M John Moore 36 Aneurism of aorta Mar. 10 „ 30 51 Had much palpitation, troublesome cough, and loud bellows sound at the base of the heart. Death was sudden, after a good night's rest. An aneurismal tumor, the size of the fist, was found involving the arch of the aorta, and tightly compressing the windpipe.
20 M John Kearns 30 Brain disease April 30 May 3 4 Vomiting and constipation were prominent symptoms. Mental faculties entire. Death was sudden. The lateral ventricles were full of serum, and the substance of the brain was firm. Kidneys large and hyperaemic. Habits ascertained to have been intemperate.
21 M Oliver Ryall 25 Brain disease „ 29 „ 5 7 Admitted in an advanced stage of disease of the brain. Look very dull and stupid; pupils dilated, dilation increased by bright light; soon coma set in, terminating in death. Arachnoid membrane remarkably dry, but considerable effusion under it. Effusion into lateral ventricles.
22 M Richard Jones 40 Pneumonia May 11 „ 12 4 hours Was in a dying state on admission, and survived only four hours. Right lung was found hepatized and infiltrated with pus.
23 F Margaret Cooper 22 Phthisis pulmonalis Mar. 30 „ 14 46 Admitted with tubercular disease, affecting principally the left lung. Continual hectic, irritable cough, quick weak pulse, etc. On examination the left lung was converted into a mass of granular, tubercular deposit. This was an instance of acute phthisis.
