PUBLIC NOTIFICATION.

Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 18th May, 1868.

IT is notified, for general information, that THURSDAY next, the 28th instant, will be observed as a Holiday at the Provincial Government Offices, in commemoration of the Birthday of Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen; and the Inhabitants of Auckland are hereby invited to join in celebrating the usual Public Holiday on that day.

ROBT. J. CREIGHTON,
Provincial Secretary.

NEW ZEALAND FLAX.

Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 15th May, 1868.

THE Superintendent has directed the following Correspondence, in reference to supplying the dried leaves of the New Zealand Flax (Phormium Tenax) for shipment, to be published for general information.

ROBT. J. CREIGHTON,
Provincial Secretary.

I have, &c.,

JOHN McLEOD.

John Williamson, Esq.,
Superintendent, Auckland.

Australian Paper Co.’s Stores,
13, Queen’s Place, Sydney,
26th March, 1868.

Sir,—You will excuse me writing to you, but hearing from Mr. ——, that you had been in Sydney lately, and that he had spoken to you on the subject of New Zealand Flax, and told me that you had great facilities for procuring the same in quantities and very cheap, I take the earliest opportunity of addressing you on the subject. I have made many experiments with this Flax, and have at last, with little expense, succeeded in extracting the gum, and by gas bleaching make it perfectly white, preserving the fibre
