Sir,—I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Honor’s letter of this date, requesting me to inform you whether I will undertake the duty of “Supervising the Collection of the Census Schedules,” and offering remuneration at the rate of 7s. 6d. per diem during the performance of this work.

In reply, I beg to state that (having learned that the General Government has no objection) I have pleasure in accepting the engagement as proposed by your Honor.

I have, &c.,

His Honor the Superintendent of Auckland.

Colonial Secretary’s Office,

Sir,—In reply to your Honor’s letter of this date, stating, that as the Resident Magistrate, whom you had appointed for the purpose, felt some difficulty in being responsible for the accuracy of the Census Returns about to be collected, you proposed to relieve him of the duty of compiling them, and enquiring whether the General Government had any objection to Dr. Bennett, Registrar General, being employed in the supervision of the collection and the compilation of those Returns, I have the honor to state, that as it appears on enquiry, that this work will not interfere with the other duties of that office, the Government has no objection to such an arrangement.

I have, &c.,
FRED. WHITAKER,
In the absence of the Colonial Secretary.
His Honor
The Superintendent.

Superintendent’s Office,

I have therefore to request that you will be good enough to transfer to that gentleman the Schedules and other documents connected with this service.

I have, &c., &c.,
J. WILLIAMSON,
